Dredging of Dania Cut Off Canal Spurs Economic Growth to Dania Beach and Broward County

More Jobs to Dania Beach The Dania Cutoff Canal is the location of at least five mega yacht repair businesses and two marine shipping companies that have been identified as benefiting from the deepening project. The Economic Analysis of the District’s Waterways in Broward County, GEC, Inc. 2008, show that these existing mega yacht repair facilities provide between 206 and 460 jobs and have an annual economic output between $32 and $65 million per year. The existing marine shipping companies employ between 110 and 268 workers and have an estimated annual economic output between $22.5 and $55 million. Three facilities on the Dania Cutoff Canal are currently considering or have taken regulatory application steps to deepen and expand at this time, thereby providing the economic benefits anticipated by FIND’s studies. These companies are Derecktor Shipyard, G&G Shipping, which is a business subsidiary of SEACOR Holdings, & Powell Brothers/Playboy Marine.
Dania Cut Super Yacht: A Case Study Take Dania Cut Super Yacht for instance. This growing company is taking advantage of the new deeper Dania Cut Off Canal by expanding their operations to include the old Broward Shipyard Docks starting this May. In addition they are planning a large facility upgrade starting immediately and will be spending a significant amount of money on a new website due to launch very soon. Dania Cut currently has 10 employees in addition to 150-200 contractors in the yard daily. With this expansion, they will increase their workforce nearly 40% and nearly double the amount of daily contractors to over 300 daily. Additionally they are adding slips to accommodate 300 foot boats. A typical 300’ yacht has upwards of 30 full time crew, all spending on the local economy. Plans call for 10-12 total slips so expect 150-300, well paid, crew hitting the local businesses and providing direct and indirect positive impacts to our local economy which does not include the money spent by the boat itself. All in all it will inject millions into the local economy.
Dania Beach is truly a marine city and we are thankful for the creation of jobs that private community partners such as Dania Cut Super Yacht provides to our local economy.
