Dredging of Dania Cut Off Canal Spurs Economic Growth to Dania Beach and Broward County

The Economic Return to the Taxpayers – In 2011 the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) performed an economic analysis to determine the effect deepening waterways in Broward and Palm Beach counties. According to the study, when the Dania Cutoff Canal (and the Intracoastal Waterway) are deepened, economic output from this business sector in Broward County would increase by an estimated $9.2 million per year and up to 38 jobs would be added. The plan anticipated that FIND would deepen the main navigation channel of the Dania Cutoff Canal (DCC) and the adjacent marine facilities would pay the FIND dredge contractor to deepen their entrance channels, basins, and berths to match the new canal depths. This turned out to be cost effective for the marine facilities as mobilization costs would be absorbed by the larger project. This additional depth allows larger vessels to come to Broward County for service and repair resulting in increased economic benefits and jobs. This also will allow Broward County to compete in an increasingly competitive global marine industry.
